5:07pm:German exports fell more than economists forecast in February as the euro area, the country’s biggest trading partner, struggled to emerge from recession.

Exports, adjusted for working days and seasonal changes, dropped 1.5 per cent from January, when they gained 1.3 per cent, while imports fell 3.8 per cent. Economists had forecast a 0.3 per cent decline in exports.

Germany’s economy, Europe’s largest, probably returned to growth in the first quarter after contracting 0.6 per cent in the final three months of last year. Still, renewed financial-market turmoil after inconclusive elections in Italy and a bailout in Cyprus may delay a recovery in the 17-nation euro area.

‘‘The export-driven manufacturing sector, which accounts for roughly a quarter of German gross domestic product, has not fully turned around yet,’’ says Christian Schulz, senior European economist at Berenberg Bank in London. ‘‘While much of the eurozone remains in serious recession, Germany will have to rely on domestic demand and exports to stronger economies such as China and the US for a growth rebound.’’

4:35pm: Internet usage in December last year exceeded half a million terabytes (550,000) for the first time in one quarter, the Bureau of Statistics revealed today. Downloads on mobile devices were 13,700 terabytes, and total internet subscribers reached 12.2 million.

“Data downloaded by fixed-line broadband accounted for 95 per cent of total data download volume,” the ABS noted.

On Wednesday Westpac’s consumer confidence index will be published at about 10.30 in the morning.

Thursday will be a big day for economic data with the ABS releasing the March labour force figures.

4:31pm: Troubled surfwear retailer Billabong appears closer to securing a 60-cents-a-share takeover deal with a consortium headed by its US-based executive Paul Naude.

Billabong says it has entered into a 10-day period of exclusive talks with Mr Naude and his consortium partner Sycamore.

‘‘There is no guarantee that the proposed transaction will proceed, and neither the Sycamore consortium nor Billabong is under any obligation to proceed with the proposed transaction …,’’ Billabong said in a statement.

The new bid values Billabong at $287.4 million and is well below a previous $1.10 a share offer.

Billabong shares last traded at 73 cents. The shares are set to resume trading tomorrow morning.

4:27pm: The SP/ASX 200 closed at a high point of 4976.8 points, a 1.45 per cent gain from where it started this morning. This is the highest since 28 March, and the biggest single-day increase since 15 March.

The best performing index was telecommunications, which was up 2.04 per cent, followed by materials, up 2.01 per cent and finance, up 1.62 per cent.

Within telcos the dominant player, Telstra, was up 2 per cent. But iiNet was up 4.87 per cent and TPG was up 3.15 per cent. iiNet opened at $5.40 and closed at $5.58. It did not make any announcements today.

The telco-index increases may have been related to the launch of the coalition’s broadband policy. Both iiNet and TPG have invested in copper-network based infrastructure, which the coalition plans to keep.

The worst performer was Sundance Resources, which dropped a whopping 47.62 per cent on news takeover talks with Hanlong had collapsed. It closed at $0.21 on Monday, and closed at $0.11 today.

3:45pm: Brent crude oil has risen above $US105 per barrel after data showed China’s inflation in March was slower than expected, giving its central bank room to keep monetary policy easy and supportive of oil demand in the world’s second-biggest consumer.

Oil prices were also underpinned by worries over increasing tension in North Korea and a stalemate in talks between Iran and Western nations.

“The softer-than-expected inflation is supportive to oil markets,” says Ben Le Brun, a market analyst at OptionsXpress in Sydney. “As the potential to tighten policy may now be on the back burner, this is more of a short-term relief.”

Front-month Brent futures rose 55 cents to $US105.21 per barrel, while US crude futures rose 31 cents to $US93.67 per barrel.

3:45pm: Tribeca Investment Partners lodged an initial substantial holder notice for Kathmandu this afternoon. It has a 6.34 per cent stake in the outdoor clothing company.

The 12.7 million shares were purchased on market between 10 December, 2012 and 5 April.

3:37pm: A vote of confidence in Australia from UBS AG’s asset management business, which said this afternoon that Australia’s credit markets will offer better returns than global peers, according to a report on Bloomberg.

Switzerland’s largest mutual-fund manager favours the nation’s BBB rated corporate bonds including covered securities issued by banks and state debt without a AAA grade, said the head of credit at UBS Global Asset Management, Tim van Klaveren.

Asset purchases by the Bank of Japan and Federal Reserve mean corporate spreads will narrow, he added.

‘‘The Fed is going to keep the pump on and now the Japanese have joined in,’’ said van Klaveren, who helps manage $37 billion of assets. ‘‘I’m more positive for the Australian credit market than global markets.’’

‘‘Our number one pick this year would be Aussie non-financial corporates, reasonably solid BBB type issuers which are still issuing at fairly attractive levels, followed by bank covered bonds and semi-government debt,’’ said van Klaveren.

3:04pm: While financials are seeeing solid gains, it’s the unloved materials names that has traders reversing short positions, says IG Markets strategist Chris Weston:

Perhaps the market is seeing the $165 billion a month of Fed/BoJ liquidity as a signal to get back in; perhaps it was the valuations, or even the Chinese CPI number gave them the extra confidence after a good open.

However, this is the sector to watch now and if we are going to see a short-term rally anywhere in the Aussie market, this looks like it could be the space.

2:54pm: A quick currency update: The Aussie is buying $US1.04 this afternoon.

But the real change is against the Japanese Yen, with our dollar hitting 103.82 Yen, the highest since July 2008.

The New Zealand dollar is buying 84.87 US cents and 84.23 Yen. The kiwi gained 0.2 per cent to $NZ1.23 per Australian dollar this afternoon.

2:46pm:BlueScope Steel is going to the US bond market to raise $US300 million ($A289.45 million).

The steel maker announced on Tuesday it had revived plans, put on hold in November, to issue high-yield senior unsecured notes.

The money would be used for general corporate purposes including refinancing debt, it said. BlueScope shares were up 21 cents at $4.90 at 2.30pm.

2:46pm: Australia’s share market is outperforming the rest of the Asia-Pacific region this afternoon.

The SP/ASX200 is up 1.17 per cent at 4962.2 points, while the other markets are mostly flat. Japan’s Nikkei 225 is taking a breather and hovering around 13215 points after four days of rises of about 2 per cent following the Bank of Japan’s stimulus package announcement.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index is flat at 21918.09 points, and the Shanghai index is flat.

2:27pm: Ford says its Focus small car was the best-selling vehicle nameplate in the world last year, with just over a million sold.

More than a quarter of all Focuses were sold in China, its largest market. The US was the car’s second-largest market.

It was the second year in a row the Focus has outsold the Toyota Corolla, according to automotive data firm R.L. Polk.

Best seller: Ford Focus.

2:19pm: Shares in Alumina are soaring after its joint venture partner Alcoa signalled that the aluminium industry had turned around, with a jump in profit.

The US aluminium giant Alcoa reported a 59 per cent rise in first quarter earnings.

Alumina chief executive John Bevan said Alcoa’s strong result reflected improved industry conditions, despite volatility in aluminium prices and a strong Australian dollar.

Alumina’s shares are up 6.2 per cent.

2:00pm: On the surface, some competitive tension has been added to the Sydney casino game by Echo Entertainment presenting the NSW Government with a $1 billion alternative to James Packer’s Barangaroo it’s-not-a-casino-it’s-a-gaming-thing proposal. But that’s only on the surface, Michael Pascoe writes:

Both Echo and Crown are seeking to exploit the weakness of the “unsolicited proposals” route to gaining government favour, a process totally unsuited to handing out an exclusive gambling licence, whatever legal euphemism Premier Barry O’Farrell might apply to it.

Just as Crown is trying to use the unsolicited proposal loophole as a way of gaining a casino licence through the backdoor, Echo is trying to cement its casino licence monopoly via a rear entrance.

A cynical soul might also think Echo’s offer to spend another billion around Pyrmont is the Echo board trying to increase pressure on Crown to use the front door via an expensive takeover offer, while Packer awaits permission from authorities in Queensland and NSW to increase Crown’s present 10 per cent stake.

1:27pm: Australia’s largest uranium producer Energy Resources of Australia says construction of its Ranger 3 Deeps mine has begun and remains on schedule and within budget.

ERA, which is majority owned by Rio Tinto, expects to commence underground exploration drilling of the Ranger 3 Deeps mine in the Northern Territory in the second quarter of 2013.

‘‘The overall project presently remains on schedule and within budget,’’ ERA said in its March 2013 Quarter Operations Review.

Exploration expenditure for the March 2013 quarter was $9 million compared to $17 million in the December 2012 quarter.

ERA shares are down 1.6 per cent to $1.22.

1:22pm: Long time property stalwart Kevin Seymour AM has reached an agreement to sell his 15.6 per cent stake in listed Queensland developer, Watpac Group to the Belguim-based Besix Group, writes BusinessDay‘s Carolyn Cummins.

Having been a board member for more than a decade on the group, Mr Seymour retired as chairman last July and will now leave the company in September this year.

In a recent interview Mr Seymour said h was ‘‘72 this year, I think that everyone should realise at a certain age they should be prepared to relinquish the reins and not want to stay there too long’’.

‘‘This is the first step in at transition to see myself have more time to use my boat and other leisure activities,’’ he said.

1:09pm: Australians downloaded data on the internet at a breakneck pace last year even as the total number of subscribers neared saturation point, a trend that is only likely to grow as the country’s broadband network is upgraded.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics out today showed the amount of data downloaded jumped by a third in the three months to December, compared to the three months to June. Downloads amounted to 550,000 terabytes of data in the final quarter of 2012, up no less than 60 percent from the same period in 2011.

The vast bulk of data was downloaded on fixed lines, where traffic grew 63 per cent for the year.

The number of internet subscribers rose by a more modest 5 per cent over 2012 to reach 12.2 million. Some 98 percent of all connections were broadband, with 49 per cent being mobile wireless.

12:57pm:China’s CPI declined sharply in March, largely because food prices retreated after Chinese New Year, say ANZ economists Li-Gang Liu and Hao Zhou.

The bird flu outbreak has complicated China’s inflation outlook. In our view, meat prices could fall significantly in the next few months due to depressed demand, but inflation pressures will likely re-emerge in the second half of the year as the supply of the meat declines.

This assessment, plus the fact that China is facing strong capital inflows and rising property prices, suggests that while the PBOC will continue to withdraw liquidity from the market, the pace of net withdrawal will be less hawkish. We thus believe that the 7-day repo rates, the most important indicator to gauge short-term liquidity conditions, will hover around the psychological barrier of 3% in the foreseeable future.

In addition, the economic outlook has become more fragile due to the continuous threat of bird flu, suggesting that markets will continue to prefer selling long-tenor IRS. As there is limited downside for the short-tenor swap rates due to continuous People’s Bank of China’s liquidity withdrawal, we thus think that yield curve will continue to flatten, waiting for more policy signals from the new administration.

12:31pm: The most popular business story today is Elizabeth Knight‘s analysis of the Australian automotive industry:

There is something of an obsession among the world’s rich, economically developed countries in maintaining a car industry. For Australia this has become an expensive luxury, according to the numerous critics who see billions of dollars of government subsidies propping up a sector without a natural future.

The critics are now on the ascendancy thanks to Holden’s announcement that almost one in five workers from its South Australian plant will lose their jobs – 400 in all. And perhaps even more importantly, 100 engineers engaged in the design of cars (mainly exported models) will also be laid off. This signals that cars made here will increasingly become modified versions of those designed in other countries.

Holden’s reasons are simple and, for it, the move makes financial sense. It is expensive to run manufacturing operations in Australia at the best of times. But when hit by the strong dollar it is impossible to compete with cheap imports.

12:21pm: The Australian dollar gained a quarter of a cent after China inflation cooled in March, leaving policymakers room to keep monetary conditions loose to support a burgeoning economic recovery.

The Aussie dollar was last at $US1.0443, showing a gain of 0.3 per cent on the day, and closing in on a 2-1/2-month peak of $US1.0498 set last week.

12:08pm:Echo Entertainment shares are up 10 cents, or 2.8 per cent, at $3.71 after the NSW government said it was considering plans that would see the Star casino operator’s monopoly licence extended beyond 2019.

11:58am: The SP ASX/200 has pushed up 1.1 per cent, or 53.1 points, to 4958.6.

11:56am: The owner of Sydney’s Star casino has lodged a proposal to ensure it’s the only casino operating in NSW after 2019.

The proposal, if accepted by the state government, would effectively rule out James Packer’s proposed $1 billion six-star Crown hotel and casino at Barangaroo.

Premier Barry O’Farrell said the government received an unsolicited proposal from Echo Entertainment Group Ltd, operator of The Star, last month.

It argues that NSW will be a stronger competitor in the international tourism market with one large resort, instead of two.

It also proposes additional investment in and around The Star and in local transport initiatives.

11:51am:Gold has declined for a second day as investors reduced asset holdings to the lowest level since August.

As Bloomberg reports, Gold for immediate delivery fell to $US1,570.67 an ounce and was at $US1,570.82 on Tuesday morning in Singapore.

Bullion futures were little changed at $US1,570.50 an ounce on the Comex in New York.

11:41am: IG strategist Evan Lucas has these thoughts on Ten:

‘‘On first blush headline figures are nothing short of awful, but this does not tell the full story.

“The headline figures [do] not illustrate the fact that the net loss includes several one-off payments valued at $292 million and restructures of $11 million.

‘‘There is a real sense now that the balance sheet is now ‘clean’, a place where Mr Hamish McLennan wants it to be. This clean out could spark more rumours about a News Limited offer, as there is no real overhang here anymore with these write-downs.

“The short answer to this release is: Headline figures were poor, underlining positioning looks to be on a firmer footing. Cost and casting are now the order of the day.”

11:31am:Business conditions have slid to their lowest level since 2009, with the manufacturing and retail sectors the hardest hit, a private survey has found.

Business conditions dropped from minus 3 to minus 7 points in March, the lowest since May 2009, as trading and employment conditions weakened, the NAB monthly business survey reported.

‘‘Heavy falls in manufacturing and retail business conditions indicate we are yet to see the upswing in consumer demand that policy makers are searching for,’’ NAB said.

‘‘Instead, it seems that either lower interest rates need more time, or more stimulus (eg. RBA rate cuts) may be needed to set the economy back on a steady growth path.’’

Business confidence improved slightly from 1 to 2 points, although confidence in the mining sector fell to four-year lows.

11:12am: Sundance chairman George Jones said the miner continued to receive support from the governments of Cameroon and Republic of Congo and from China for the Mbalam-Nabeba project.

He said Sundance was confident of finding a suitable partner to bring the project into production.

Hanlong had proposed to acquire all the issued share capital of Sundance.But last week Sundance said it had not received $5 million in funding from Hanlong.

11:03am: Ten’s new CEO Hamish McLennan said the network is not going to re-evaluate its target audience and flagged that it is not going to target such a ‘‘young’’ and ‘‘promiscuous’’ audience that saw it produce failures like Being Lara Bingle and The Shire last year.

‘‘We’re looking at a slightly older skew’’ said Mr McLennan.

‘‘Young viewers are the most promiscuous in the market place.’’

10:53am: Despite posting a huge $243 million loss, shares in the Ten Network are up 5.08 per cent in early trade.

10:45am: And a bit more on Sundance Resources, which has plummeted a huge 54 per cent this morning after conceding its prolonged takeover deal with Chinese group Hanlong had failed.

The two parties were locked in intense negotiations for several weeks in a bid to salvage a deal.

Before today, the stock last traded at 21 cents on March 19 – almost half what it traded in December.

As BusinessDay’s Peter Ker reports, the takeover had appeared doomed for several months after Hanlong missed numerous deadlines to provide evidence of their ability to fund the takeover, which was designed to give Hanlong control of Sundance’s iron ore project in Africa.

10:18am: Sundance shares have instantly plummeted on the back of news that its takeover deal with Hanlong is dead.

Shares in Sundance have halved in the first ten minutes of trading, and a short time ago they were down 11 cents to 10 cents per share.

The stock had not traded since March 19 when it was fetching 21 cents per share and at that price Sundance’s market capitalisation had already halved since December.

10:15am: In early trade, the All Ordinaries index is 35.1 points higher, or 0.7 per cent, to 4947.8, while the benchmark SP/ASX200 is 37.3 points higher, or 0.8 per cent, to 4942.8.

10:05am:The Ten Network has reported a 21.9 per cent fall in its revenue and a net loss of $243 million for the six months to the end of February.

The broadcasting company did not declare an interim dividend.

The firm’s recently appointed chief executive, Hamish McLennan, said the results were a reflection of poor rating and revenue performance, as well as significant non-recurring charges.

But he said Ten was “clearing the decks and preparing for the future”.

“The Ten Board has taken decisive action since December 2012 – including a capital raising and senior management changes – to address the company’s unsatisfactory performance,” Mr McLennan said.

9:43am: US aluminium giant Alcoa has reported a 59 per cent rise in year-over-year earnings, pointing to strong efficiency gains and a slightly tighter supply market.

But in an interview with CNBC after the results, chief executive Klaus Kleinfeld declined to rule out selling Alcoa’s raw material assets: “This is not the time to speculate,” he said.

Stubbornly low aluminum prices have weighed on the company’s business of mining bauxite, refining into alumina, and smelting alumina to produce aluminum.

9:34am:US stocks ended a volatile session higher overnight as investors looked ahead to an earnings season expected to show modest growth despite concerns about macroeconomic conditions.

Wall Street fluctuated between positive and negative territory for much of the day before climbing in the final hour of trading, ending near its session highs. However, volume was light and the Dow’s gains were limited by a selloff of Johnson Johnson shares.

Forecasts for first-quarter earnings have been scaled back in 2013, with profits seen rising just 1.6 per cent from the year-ago quarter, according to Thomson Reuters data. In January, earnings were seen rising 4.3 per cent.

The drop in expectations has come as economic figures suggest the recovery could be less robust than some had thought. Weak corporate results could give investors further reasons to sell, pushing both the Dow and the SP 500 back from recent all-time closing highs.

- Consensus forecasts are (would you believe) north of$3.50. Problem is, if Tinkler’s funders feel the pinch they might just make him liquidate – their problem is, they have exposure to WHC so it’s a double edge sword.
  
  Production will ramp up so future looks good on fundamentals. But the Sword of Damacles still hangs over them and coal prices remain soft. Buy around $2 and sell $2.50 and who could argue?

- Infrastructure projects in AUSTRALIA are the some of the most expensive products in the world. They have little to zero return value on invested money. 20 years ago was a different setting. We need unsustainable 8% real wages growth to recover large scale project costs over a 20 year period (i.e. utility costs paid for by taxes or levies / fees). We simply cannot do it anymore as wages fail to keep up with these high scaled and over priced expected returns set against utility costs. Power, Water and Roads are the obvious 3 items.

- Having my superannuation in NSW State Super i can attest to this being good idea in theory but not in practice. As Infrastructure projects are risky and CAN DO LOSE MONEY.
  
  State super invested in the cross city tunnel debacle and took a haircut/loss of $60 million in 2007. It was through the intervention of then minister Della Bosca who put the tab on the public purse so that members didn’t lose money.
  
  If any privately owned Super fund was to make a loss on an infrastructure project i highly doubt there will be any government willing to stump up and pay for it.
