China Southern hails visa-free Guangzhou stopovers

Air travellers with a ticket for a third destination will soon be able to break their journey at Guangzhou for three days without a visa, said China Southern Airlines.

The new visa policy is expected to come into force this year at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN) for travellers from 45 countries including Australia, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Korean, the UAE, the UK and the US, said the carrier.

A 72-hour transit visa-free policy was implemented on January 1 for Beijing Airport (PEK), Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA).

China Southern Airlines announced its ‘Canton Route’ strategy on August 15, 2012.

The route would operate as a shortcut connecting Europe, Asia and Australia, said the airline.

Passengers between Europe and Australia save two hours by transferring at Guangzhou rather than Beijing or Shanghai, according to the carrier.

China Southern has declared a strategy of first developing Australian transfers and then linking Europe and Oceania through Guangzhou.
