SINGAPORE: Some 3,000 residents in Jurong and Yuhua celebrated Harmony Day with a carnival in the heartlands on Saturday.

The aim of the event was to get residents from various ethnic groups to bond with one another and embrace Singapore’s diversity.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who graced the event, said there is the need to celebrate what’s unique to Singapore.

He said: “Celebrate the fact that we are a multi-racial people, different religions, different races living together, not just peacefully but enjoying the fact that we are multi-racial.

“This is one of the most wonderful things, in fact I would say the most precious thing about Singapore that we all preserve. We want to make sure that among our young kids it continues and we want to make sure Singapore remains a special place.”

Mr Tharman and other MPs joined in the fun at the carnival as residents got a chance to bond over games and food.

Residents also enjoyed various performances over a camp fire as some lights were turned off to commemorate Earth Hour.

The event also marked the launch of the Community Emergency Response Team on Patrol.

It is made up of some 70 residents who feel strongly about their own estate’s safety and security.

They are trained in first aid and to help in crime prevention.

One of them is 70-year-old Nancy Low.

She said: “During our patrol, we will look out for suspicious characters roaming around at the void deck or in the car park, and also to look out for unidentified articles or parcels that are left lying around at the void deck.”
