THE second meeting of the Coffs Harbour City Council for 2013 will tomorrow night consider the outcomes from last year’s Business Improvement and Development study trip to Singapore and Britain.

The tour last December was billed as an opportunity for senior council staff to get a first-hand look “outside the square” at how other local government authorities are responding to the broad issue of financial sustainability.

The council’s general manager, Steve McGrath, noted the tour was undertaken because “the cost of continuing to deliver the services the community expects is larger than what council receives in revenues”.

“The council is faced with an annual infrastructure funding gap of $6 million and an infrastructure renewals backlog of $65 million,” Mr McGrath said.

The Singapore leg of the tour included a visit to global software and services company Civica, which is helping public sector businesses manage organisational change as a response to long- term financial constraint.

In the United Kingdom, the delegation visited Gloucester City Council, the London Legacy Develop Corporation, and the Luton, Bournemouth, Woking and Slough councils.
