Singaporean executive wins Changi"s million-dollar draw

45-year-old business development director Peh Hock Peng has become the third person to become a millionaire thanks to the “Be a Changi Millionaire” 2012 Grand Draw.

He walked away with the grand prize of SGD$1 million in cash, the largest cash prize ever given in a local retail promotion or by any airport in the world.

The frequent traveler, who works for a Singapore-based intellectual property firm, received the winning ticket in August 2012, after he purchased over SGD$200 worth of cosmetics for his wife at the Perfumes and Cosmetics store at Terminal 2′s Departure Transit Mall.

He flew through Changi Airport about 20 times in 2012, mostly for business.

Two other people became overnight millionaires from previous draws. The first was former Singapore deejay Ivan Rantung and the second was engineer Jessica Down from Perth, Australia.

Peh credits his family for his winnings, saying that they were his “lucky charm”. He plans to upgrade his family to a better property and buy a new car with the cash he has won.

His immediate family – his wife and two sons aged 12 and nine – as well his mother-in-law and sister were on hand to cheer for him at the draw’s grand finals.

He edged out four other finalists – a fellow Singaporean, two Chinese nationals and an Australian – to pick the door to the winning chamber, which was filled with mock SGD$50 notes and a backdrop with SGD$1 million.

But the rest of draw’s finalists did not leave empty-handed. They all received $SGD5,000 in cash, a three-night stay at the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport Hotel and airfare for the non-Singapore residents.

Changi Airport Group received a overwhelming response of 2.1 million lucky draw entries over the six-month promotion period. Response was so good that it will be organising a fourth installment to the draw in 2013. The group will release details in the coming months.
