Double rainbow across Singapore sky dazzles social media users

SINGAPORE – Social media cheered the ephemeral appearance of a double rainbow that spanned the skies of Singapore after a light shower on Wednesday morning.

“Starting the day with a rainbow in the sky! icon smile Gonna be a good one! :D,” wrote Twitter user, Chay Chee.

The rainbow was sighted mostly in the western and northwestern parts of the island.

In Chinese culture, a double rainbow is considered auspicious and a reason for reflection and meditation.

Rainbows are an optical and meteorological phenomenon in which a spectrum of light appears in the sky when the sun shines on droplets of moisture in the earth’s atmosphere. A double rainbow – such as the one seen in Singapore this morning – is formed in the same way as a single rainbow. With a double rainbow, however, two reflections are coming from the same area of rainfall. The second rainbow is slightly fainter because sunlight is reflected internally twice by the same raindrops.

While the order of colours in a regular rainbow from the outside is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, the pattern is inverted in the second rainbow due to the angle of reflection.

Check out some of the prettiest shots of the phenomenon posted on social media below.
