State of the Arts: Jan 13 to 19

SINGAPORE — We’ve barely begun 2014 and the visual arts scene has already exploded, thanks to Art Stage Singapore and other auxiliary events such as those under the Singapore Art Week banner — the Art In Motion gallery bus tours, the Aliwal Arts Centre’s urban festival, et al; as well as the Art Apart Fair and the inaugural Prudential Eye Art Awards, which saw Russian provocateurs Pussy Riot in attendance. Over at Gillman Barracks, Pearl Lam Galleries opened its doors and the Centre For Contemporary Arts held an exhibition and talks. Elsewhere, Taman Jurong’s community museum marked its first anniversary, the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival wrapped up and former Singapore Arts Festival and Singapore Biennale general manager Low Kee Hong left the National Arts Council (he joins Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District as Head of Artistic Development (Theatre) next month). A musical based on Ah Boys To Men was revealed; Singapore film-maker Toh Hai Leong passed away; the Singapore Tourism Board was embroiled in a controversy surrounding the design of its Singapore Art Week guide (which turned out to be similar to the one designed last year by creative agency DoodleRoom); while an assistant director at the Media Development Authority was charged with corruption and forgery in connection to grant applications.
