NEW DELHI, 6 December 2013: For the third time in a row, Thailand was voted the ‘favourite country’ at the annual readers’ travel awards of the Indian edition of Condé Nast Traveller.
The prestigious award were released 3 December during a week when Thailand’s image was buffeted yet again by violent protests in the Thai capital.
Indian travel agents were predicting cuts in bookings to Thailand as a result of the protest but for the month of December visits are relatively stable. Travellers have booked and paid for holiday and are reluctant to cancel and lose cash deposits.
Mr Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Thai Embassy, and Miss Runjuan Tongrut, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office in New Delhi, accepted the award.
But in the long-run, India’s tour operators are confident the Thailand trips will bounce back quickly based on the country’s high standing in the minds of the travellers, a fact illustrated by the awards it wins for holiday value and delivery of quality service.
About 300 of India’s leading hoteliers, travel agents and airline executives attended the annual presentations.
Minister and deputy chief of mission of the Thai Embassy, Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office director in New Delhi, Runjuan Tongrut, accepted the award.
Mr Soonthorn after receiving the award stressed that the political situation in Thailand would not harm the country’s tourism industry and foreign travellers were always welcome in the kingdom.
“Thailand attracted over 1 million Indian travellers last year,” Mr Soonthorn said, noting that Indian arrivals have also risen strongly this year.
Other winners in the favourite category were Dubai in second place and Mumbai in third.
Malaysia was recognised as the favourite emerging overseas destination. Singapore’s W Singapore – Sentosa Cove was awarded favourite new overseas hotel.
Magazine readers named Singapore Changi Airport favourite airport and Emirates the favourite airline for travelling overseas.
In the travel booking section, readers voted Thomas Cook as the favourite specialised tour operator, followed by Makemytrip.com leading the online pack and TripAdvisor as the top travel app.
