CRACK international jockey Joao Moreira will ride at the two-day Newcastle Cup carnival.
Brazilian Moreira is one of the world’s best riders and the champion jockey in Singapore, where he is based.
In the season at Singapore he has ridden over 140 winners at a strike rate of one victory at less than every three rides.
He has already had success in Australia, having won a group 2 Chelmsford Stakes and a group 2 Hill Stakes on Trusting for owner Nathan Tinkler.
He has been coaxed to Broadmeadow for the two biggest days on the local racing calendar by Luke Murrell and Jamie Lovett of Newcastle-based syndicators Australian Bloodstock.
Moreira will ride German import Salon Soldier in the group 3 $150,000 Cameron Handicap (1500m) on Wednesday, September 18.
The following day he will ride Sharnee Rose in the $125,000 group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) for fillies and mares.
Sharnee Rose resumes at Randwick on Saturday over 1200m.
Salon Soldier and Sharnee Rose are trained at Broadmeadow by Kris Lees.
“He will ride for us in feature events on both days but is open to taking any other rides. Jamie and I are taking rides for him while he is in Newcastle.”
Moreira will fly into Sydney early on Cameron morning and be driven directly to Broadmeadow race course.
He will return to Singapore on Thursday night, where he has rides on Friday night.
“We forged a relationship with Joao when he rode Mawingo to win a group 3 event in Singapore,” Lovett said.
“He is an almighty rider, considered by all the critics as one of the best in the world.
“We are just so keen to win races on our home turf over the carnival because many of the people in our syndications come from Newcastle.
“Having a jockey of his quality on our horses can only help our cause.
“He has a visa and is ready to go.
“He said he would study up on the Broadmeadow track before he arrives.”
AAP reports: Common sense trumped sentiment for Hugh Bowman when he chose to ride Norzita over Shoot Out in Saturday’s Tramway Stakes at Randwick.
Bowman has ridden Shoot Out exclusively for the past two seasons and the pair have combined for three group 1 victories.
He admits to having a soft spot for the seven-year-old but took a view to the future in opting to stick with Norzita, whose star is still on the rise.
“You can only ride one horse,” he said.
“What do you do? I had to choose one.
“Shoot Out, as much as I love him, he is at a level and he’s not going beyond that.
“There is every chance he’s got a couple more group 1s in him, but he’s not going to develop into a better horse, where Norzita can certainly do that.”
Norzita captured two group 1 wins during her three-year-old season and Bowman was aboard for both.
“It is a coup for the Newcastle Jockey Club that Joao agreed to ride at the carnival,” Murrell said.
