Students add colour to Braddell Heights estate

SINGAPORE – Residents of Braddell Heights woke up to a more colourful estate over the weekend after 900 students from Nanyang Junior College painted murals around the HDB estate.

As part of the school’s 35th anniversary celebrations, its entire first-year cohort and some students from its Art Elective Programme (AEP) painted murals designed by the students.

They touched up 24 of the 30 murals that the school had done as part of its 30th anniversary. They also painted 11 new ones.

Some of the previous works had been damaged due to construction work in the blocks and whitewashing on the walls.

Principal Kwek Hiok Chuang, who had been involved in the first mural-painting, was all smiles as he surveyed his students’ work.

This year’s theme was “Home, Heart and Hope”, inspired by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day rally speech last year, he said.

“I wanted the students to do something useful and meaningful instead of the standard celebrations – carnivals and performances. It’s a great way for them to strengthen their friendship as well.”

AEP student Edwina Zhao, who is in her second year in junior college, designed a mural at Block 332, Serangoon Avenue 3 that shows a map of Singapore with notable landmarks such as the Merlion.

She said: “(We have been here) since 9.30am and this took about six hours to complete. It’s a lot of work, but I want every little detail to be looked after, so that the residents will be happy with the mural.”

First-year JC student Wong Jia Hwee said: “It’s great to be able to give back to the community and also defeat the stereotype that JC students are too busy studying to be involved with other activities.”
