Brunei students visit Singapore on field trip



BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei – Twenty-four Upper-Sixth PTE Meragang art students left for Singapore yesterday for a three-day educational field trip.

The principal of Meragang Sixth Form Centre (PTEM), Chong Li Chen said to The Brunei Times, said the visit would be an excellent opportunity for students to improve their drawing and painting skills, while learning about life in the process.

Many of the students will be visiting Singapore for the first time. Dk Selinna Pg DP HJ Asmalee, who is leading the group, said the field trip would broaden the Bruneian students’ horizons and help them mature as artists.

Upper sixth student Pg Tashya Nadia Febriani Pg Anak Tahiruddin Al-Haj, 16, said she was keen to learn about Singaporean and Asian art. She is also looking forward to meeting Singaporean artists and seeing Singapore’s architecture.

Mohd Sameon Basir Ahmad, 18, who is visiting Singapore for the first time, said he hoped the trip would prove inspirational and generate lots of ideas. He is also keen to learn about abstract art and cubism, as well as portraiture and local music.”I’m excited and nervous. I can’t wait to go there. I hope it will inspire us more and give lots of knowledge.” he said.

Accompanying the group will be art tutors Teo Ai Mooi, Asilah Maziyah Mohamad Yussof, Mohammad Mardhi Hamid and Mohammad Faris Hj Ahmad.

The PTEM said in a statement that art was a forum for safe expression, exploration, imagination, communication and cultural and historical understanding. It went on to say that PTEM’s Art and Design Department was always finding ways to improve art education by organising exhibitions, field trips and encouraging students to participate in art expos, competitions and exhibitions. This trip will be eventful and memorable for both tutors and students alike as it it the first international art field trip hosted by the PTEM. The field trip has been organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and will involve visits to several art exhibitions, such as the prestigious “Art Stage Singapore”, “The Art of the Brick” by Nathan Sagawa, the “Outside In” photography exhibition, as well as architectural landmarks such as the Art Science Museum at Marina Bay Sands, Garden by the Bay, Helix Bridge and the Esplanade. Students will also be attending an art workshop by Astrid Dahl and “Playing with Patterns” at the Art Science Museum.The Brunei Times .
