UOB takes big step in contactless payment

UOB plans to have all of its approximately 20,000 merchants accept contactless card payments over the next three years.

This means contactless card payments will soon be fairly ubiquitous, given that UOB currently boasts of controlling Singapore’s largest merchant payment base.

The bank announced this in a press statement over the weekend, which showed it has seen an over threefold increase in the use of contactless card payments in April, compared to a year ago.

In 2007, UOB was the first bank in Singapore to provide contactless payment via Visa payWave on its credit and debit cards.
